The human body can be seriously injured or killed by electrical currents as small as 10 milliamps under the right conditions, and the right conditions, specifically contact between a person, an energized electrical component, and a path to ground, are not as rare as most people assume. Wet hands near a bathroom outlet, a dropped appliance near water, an outdoor tool used near a damp surface: these are everyday situations that create the potential for a ground-fault event.
A ground-fault circuit interrupter, commonly called a GFCI, is designed to detect the tiny imbalance in current that occurs when electricity is leaking to ground through a person or an unintended path, and to interrupt the circuit in as little as one-fortieth of a second. That is faster than the human nervous system can respond, and in the context of electrocution, that speed is the difference between a startling experience and a fatal one.
Despite this, many homes, particularly older homes in Central Texas, either lack GFCI protection in required locations, have GFCI devices that have failed and no longer provide protection, or have outlets that appear to be GFCI-protected but were wired incorrectly and provide no actual protection at all. Understanding where GFCI protection is required, how to verify it is working, and what home inspectors look for is practical safety knowledge for every homeowner.
A GFCI outlet or breaker continuously monitors the current flowing out on the hot wire and returning on the neutral wire. Under normal conditions, these two currents are equal. When a ground-fault occurs, some of the current is taking an alternate path to ground, typically through a person, and the returning current on the neutral is slightly less than the outgoing current on the hot. The GFCI detects this imbalance of as little as 4 to 6 milliamps and trips the circuit within milliseconds.
GFCI protection can be provided in two ways: through a GFCI outlet, which has the familiar TEST and RESET buttons on its face and can protect downstream outlets on the same circuit, or through a GFCI circuit breaker installed in the main panel, which protects every outlet on that circuit. In practice, a single GFCI outlet installed at the first outlet in a circuit can protect all subsequent outlets on that circuit if wired correctly through its LOAD terminals.
The National Electrical Code (NEC) has expanded GFCI requirements significantly over the decades, and the required locations in a new home today are substantially more extensive than what was required in homes built in the 1970s, 1980s, or even the 1990s. Homes that were built before these requirements were adopted are not automatically required to be retrofitted to current code. However, from a safety standpoint, bringing older homes into compliance with current GFCI standards is one of the highest-value electrical safety improvements a homeowner can make.
Every GFCI outlet should be tested monthly, and the process takes about 10 seconds. Press the TEST button on the face of the outlet. This simulates a ground-fault condition and should cause the RESET button to pop out. Plug a lamp or phone charger into the outlet before pressing TEST to confirm that power to the outlet is interrupted when it trips. Then press RESET to restore power and verify that the outlet is functioning again.
A GFCI outlet that does not trip when tested, or that trips but does not restore power when reset, has failed and should be replaced. A GFCI outlet that has no power at all may have tripped without being reset, or it may be a downstream outlet protected by another GFCI device elsewhere on the circuit that has tripped.
